It’s time to join Rex, a German Shepard police dog, as we go on the hunt for criminals and take their loot instead! You may think this is a great theme thought up by Novomatic but it is actually a licensed slot machine based on a television show, though UK players will not be familiar with it.
Inspector Rex is a long running TV series which first aired way back in 1994 and was set in Austria until 2008 when new arrangements were agreed and it then began being produced in Italy, mainly in Rome. I follows the adventures of Rex and his team members from a homicide unit as they fight crime, however no other characters from the show feature in the Rex slot machine which will be disappointing for fans. It does have a highly rewarding free spins feature and gamble mode though!
With 5 reels and 40 paylines, Rex offers bet per line options ranging from £0.01 up to £2.50 meaning all paylines can be bet on for £0.40 per spin up to a maximum of £100 – just ensure you play within your budget and control any losses!
With Rex being a licensed slot machine I think it is rather unfortunate that Novomatic have not included additional characters from the show as symbols, instead Rex features alongside pretty generic crime busting symbols. Of course, Rex is the main symbol and is accompanied by his paw print, police siren, police car, police helicopter, gun, handcuffs, sandwich, plus playing cards commonly used in table games from Ace to 9.
Rex is also by the highest valued symbol with five on a payline rewarding you with a 25x win, while in comparison five of a 10 or 9 playing card only reward you with a 2.5x win.
The sounds are also a let-down. I expected to be greeted by the television show soundtrack when I loaded Rex, but instead it was the same old generic theme tune used in other Novomatic slot machines like Xtra Hot and Columbus. There are some siren sounds when you land a win on the reels but that’s not enough.
One thing they have done great is the inclusion of animations after a winning combination. For example, I landed three Rex symbols on a payline and they then sprung into life with Rex jumping through a pane of glass – just as happened in a scene from the television show!
Landing three or more Siren Scatter symbols in any positions on the reels see you backed into a corner with only one outcome – big wins! It sees the free spins mode begin and the good guys (yep, you) rewarded with a total of 16 free spins – an unusual figure as its usually ten or fifteen but we certainly won’t complain as it gives us many opportunities to accumulate lots of credits.
Throughout the free spins feature the sandwich symbol transforms into Rex instead in a move which always results in additional winning combinations on the reels, and therefore sees you make some big busts and win lots of credits along the way!
A gamble feature has become a firm fixture in online slots from Novomatic, and Rex is no exception. After any standard wins you are asked whether you wish to collect your winnings or gamble them in the hope of doubling them up.
Should you opt to gamble you are presented with a playing card that has Rex’s paw print on it and flashes between black and red. There is a black button and a red button, with your mission being to select the colour of your choice and try to time it so that they playing card displays that colour. A successful mission doubles up your winnings - however a failed mission sees the bad guys clinch all of your winnings instead!
When I saw Rex was a licensed slot machine I was pretty excited, however that was short lived as it just didn’t live up to my expectations despite Novomatic doing a great job with other branded slots such as Marilyn Red Carpet.
The soundtrack from the TV series hasn’t even been used, instead its generic tunes, plus only Rex features rather than using several of the other characters from his homicide unit in place of the boring playing card symbols. Saying that, the free spins mode is pretty generous with 16 to enjoy but that really is the only reason you will want to play Rex.
